Question: What is the correct way to serve the birdie?

URL Link to video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=jAwKKcG48H4

Answer: there are three ways you can correctly serve in a game of badminton. First, you can underhand the birdie with your racket. Place the birdie in front of you and release it, as your release the birdie, come underhanded with the racket and swing at the birdie and follow through. This is the most conventional and popular way of serving. Next, there is the half swing. Make the racket parallel to the net and place the birdie in your non racket hand. Hit the birdie and slightly follow through as you just release the birdie out of your hand. Finally, there is the backhand swing, which is used mostly in double and by those who are more skilled at the sport. You place the racket toward your chest in a backhand like state. Make sure the face of racket is facing directly outwards. Release birdie directly in front of the open faces racket and hit it only following through though slightly as you do. these are the three ways you can serve in badminton,

Question: What is rally scoring in Badminton?

URL Link to video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=p42wxuN8MZE

Answer: When you win 2 out of 3 games of 21 points. If the serving side wins a rally, it scores a point, and serves again but from the alternate service court. If the receiving side wins the rally, the score remains unchanged and the service passes to the next player in turn. In singles, this is the opponent: in double it's either the partner or, if both players have just had a turn of serving, one of the opponents. In men's singles and doubles events, 15 points wins a game. However, if the score reaches 14-14, the side which first reached 14 can choose either to play to 15, or to set the game to 17 points. The final score will reflect the sum of the points won before setting plus the points gained in setting.Scoring in women's singles is slightly different. 11 points wins a game and there is the option to set to 13 points at 10-10.

Question: What is the proper badminton racket forehand grip?

URL Link to video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SuRCfLeIM6M

Answer: First, hold the racket sideways, then place palm parallel to and on the head of the racket, and slide down until it reaches the handle. Grip the handle like the concept of shaking one's hand. The index finger needs to be positioned like holding a trigger of a gun to make a "V" between the thumb and index finger. This forehand grip is useful to make overhead shots, as well as shots on the same side of your body as the racket.

Question:What is the standard equipment needed for badminton?

URL Link to video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_AtapKX07RI

Answer: In order to play badminton, a person needs  1.A racket, a light long-handled racket used by badminton players that consists of a head, a throat, and a shaft. There are a couple of different types of rackets out there. Depending on what they are made of the cost can greatly increase. Wooden rackets have gotten harder to find, but you can still get many different types of metal rackets ranging from Carbon Fiber rackets to a much cheeper steel racket.  2. A shuttlecock or birdie. This can either be a traditional feather birdie, consisting of 16 feathers. Or if you would like to have a longer lasting birdie, you can buy a plastic version. A net, basically your basic volleyball net will do.Also you might want to invest in a pair of badminton shoes. These shoes should have good grip, and not leave marks on the court, so no black soles. You can get most of this equipment online at http://www.badmintonwarehouse.com/category_s/100.htm. Basic tennis shoes will work, but it is suggested that you only use these shoes for badminton b/c they will last longer and will perform better. Mainly b/c they will only be on a badminton court so you wont get rocks and other foreign materials in them.

Question: What is the correct way to hit a Smash Shot?

URL Link to video:http://www.ehow.com/video_2286939_smash-shot-badminton.html

Answer: You start out standing in the base position.  If you are right handed you will bring your right foot back and raise your left hand straight up to act as your guide.  If you are left handed you will do the opposite.  Then you need to make sure that your shoulders are pushed back.  When you are about to make contact with the birdie you are going to hit it at the position called one o'clock.  If you raise your right hand straight up and then tilt it a little more forward this is the one o'clock position.  As you make contact with the birdiie you will want to make sure you fling your wrist forward to help the birdie be hit in the way you want it.  The last important thing to hit a smash shot is to make sure you follow through after you have hit the birdie.

Question:  How many times can you hit the birdie on each side of the net before it must go to the opposing team; can one team hit the birdie more if they are playing doubles?

URL Link to video:http:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wfjoyu_Z6mw

Answer:  Each team may hit the birdie one time no matter if they are playing singles or doubles.  In the attached clip it is evident that each team is only allowed to hit the birdie once each time it comes over the net.  If they hit the birdie more than once, the opposing team gains one point- even if one player hits the birdie then their teamate hits it.

Question: What are the components of a badminton racket, and how do you know if a racket is for you?

URL Link to video:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m6e5a7mXQjo

Answer: There are many different kinds of rackets, but every racket has the same basic components.  Some rackets are made up of different materials and can range from thirty dollars to hundreds of dollars. There are four major components of the racket, and they are the head, throat, shaft, and the handle and they are in this order from the head which is the striking section to the handle which is the end that you hold on to.  In order to find a racket that fits you best, you must first see what is in your price range; next, you can hold the racket and see how it feels in your hand when you swing it, but the racket is only as good as the player in the end.

Question: How does badminton differ from tennis

URL Link to video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7vAhUljTmjU

Answer:There are many similarities between tennis and badminton. Both sports involve rackets. Both involve hitting an object over the net and scoring when your opponent cannot return it. Both sports can be played 1-on-1 or 2-on-2. Tennis and badminton both have worldwide appeal and are Olympic sports. Yet if you've never seen a tennis match or badminton match, there are definitely some characteristics that will make it easy to distinguish one from the other.

Question: When playing a game of doubles badminton, what score do you play to and how many rounds do you play when playing a rally scoring game?

URL Link to video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p42wxuN8MZE

Answer: When you are playing a game of doubles and are keeping the score by rally scoring you are going to play three games and the person that wins two out of the three wins. In these games you are going to play to 21. The score also has to be two points apart. If the score stays consistently one point apart and the teams get to 29-29 then the next person to score wins the game.

Question: How to hit a drop effective drop shot?

URL Link to video: http://www.youtube/watch?v=qIQbvj9oHUA

Answer: It is a similar motion to the overhead forehand shot. Reduce the amount of power on the shot to effectively place the birdie behind the net. From the back of the court make contact with the birdie when the head of the racket is over your shoulder.  The motion starts in the leg moves to the arm and follows through down to the leg.

Question: How to hit a block shot in badminton

URL Link to video: http://www.ehow.com/video_4951428_hit-block-shot-badminton.html

Answer: The block shot is usally used during a doubles match. The grip use for the block shot is slightly different than the normal grip used when playing badminton. For a block shot, you slightly turn your racket in order to have your hand flat against the large side of the handle. This enables you to use the racket as a defense wall, blocking any shot coming at you right after it crosses over the net. The advantages of this shot are that it limits the time that the shuttle is on your side of the court and it allows you to effectively hit and block the shot with minimal movement. The disadvantage of this shot is if you miss the block, the shuttle will most likely hit the ground and cause the other team to gain a point. For this reason, the shot is more effective when playing with doubles.

Question: How do players qualify for the Olympic Badminton team?

Link to video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-EQHJ3VaYk

Answer: The Badminton World Federation determines who qualifies to participate in the Olympics. For singles category twenty nine competitors are selected while for doubles a total of 19 pairs are selected. This is determined by ranking. The selection process ends once all posistions are filled. All players and pairs that rank in the top sixteen of the list qualify. The National Olympic Committee also has the opportunity to select three players to send. Players and pairs that rank all the way through to 64th place on that ranking are eligible to attend the Olympics. However, each NOC, which are all countries participating, can send only two players or pairs from that list. In the situation that a player or pair ranks below 64th they may still qualify if they are the highest ranked competitor in their country. Finally, one place in the singles event is awarded by the Tripartite Comission, which allows each continent to have at least one player and pair. Furthermore, the nation that hosts the event may either select either a pair or single to fill two spots if no one has already qualified. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Question: How do you perform a drive underhand serve?

URL Link to video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=6chDR28aa7g

Answer: You go about performing a drive underhand serve first by starting in the backhand serve position.  The idea of the serve is to flick the shuttle rapidly with the racket to shoot the shuttlecock into the back of the opponents court.  This shot is aimed towards the opponents serve line at the back of their court.  The shot has to be made below the waist with the head of the racket below the hand.  The racket should be gripped like a backhand grip with the thumb on the larger side of the racket.  The shot is supposed to lift the shuttlecock instead of loft it so instead of going into the close court it is shot into the backcourt with a flick.  This serve is mainly used in double games with four players, however, is commonly used in single games as well.
